According to NAN, the incident happened about 7:30pm; midway into the match, youths wielding dangerous weapons stormed the viewing centre in Onuebonyi area of the town. According to sources the attackers stormed the viewing centre with the aim of attacking a second year student of Ebonyi State University(EBSU) Abakaliki who was sitting with his friends in the middle row.
The cultists were said to have lynched on their target various weapons on him. The attack led to a stampede as viewers ran towards the only entrace in the centre.
