Governor David Newze Umahi has requested that civil servants wishing to opt out of the state government's contributory pension scheme to formally indicate such intent in writing so that their names will be removed from the scheme.
This comes after series of negotiation between the state executive council and the leadership of labour unions in the state over the 8 percent deduction from workers salaries by the state government as a result of the new pension law signed last week.
The Governor denied allegations that the pensions law violated the pension reforms act of 2014 stating that the law was concurrent with the pensions reforms act, which empowers states to adopt a pension policy that would suit its peculiarities.
Gov Umahi exonerated his administration from allegations that his administration had began deducting workers salaries even before the law was sent to the state house of assembly for consideration and ordered immediate refund to those affected.
