An unfortunate incident occurred yesterday when a house
located at Mgbabor street, Abakaliki belonging to a certain Mr Nweze caught fire and was consequently
burnt beyond rescue.
The fire outbreak started at around 10pm but was not
discovered early by the occupants of the house until an empty room whose
occupant was absent as at the time of the disaster had been burnt to ashes. A woman who is
also an occupant of the house but would not mention her name to reporters due to
duress, alerted every other occupants of the house who were all able to escape
from the grasp of the outbreak.
However, The Ebonyi State Fire Service Department could not
make it early enough to redeem the situation as majority of the properties
belonging to the peasant occupants were completely burnt while a part of the
building also collapsed due to the severity of the incidence. The fire combatants were
only just able to stop the fire from spreading to the neighbouring houses. As at the time of this report, the source of the fire
outbreak was yet to be discovered.
