The Federal Government has confirmed that the Lassa Epidemic has claimed about 64 lives with 212 reported cases. The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, made this known at the emergency National Council of Health meeting in Abuja yesterday January 19th 2016, The Minister said this figure was from 62 local government areas in 17 affected states. The affected States include Bauchi, Niger,
Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Nasarawa, Lagos, Delta, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Kogi as well as the FCT.
He stressed that there was high level of denial and conspiracy across some states and appealed to health managers to stop the trend. He singled out Ebonyi state as one of perpetrators as it failed to report five suspected cases and one death. Lassa outbreak has been a regular occurance in Ebonyi State but with most outbreaks being contained.
Adewole added that in an efforts to stop the spread of the deadly virus, Lassa fever diagnostic centres will be created in six of the most affected states. They include Niger, Nasarawa, Taraba, Plateau, Bauchi and Ondo states. This will bring the number of Lassa fever treatment centres in the country to twelve as six centres have been earlier created in Edo, Borno, Kano, Lagos, Oyo, and the FCT.
