10-year-old boy dies, others wounded in Owerri as market demolition goes wrong(Graphic photos)


Owerri, the capital of Imo State witnessed a shocker after the state government's attempt to demolish Eke Ukwu Market led to the loss of human lives.


The Pandemonium led to the death of a ten-year-old boy identified as Somtochukwu Ibeanusi who was alleged to have been killed by a stray bullet fired by the security personnel drafted to the supervise the demolition.

At least two people were confirmed dead and many others injured during the encounter. According to Punch newspapers, Many others were hospitalised owing to injuries sustained when the soldiers allegedly open fire as traders protested against the demolition of the market.

The Father of the deceased Isaiah Ibeanusi told journalists that the incident occurred while he was trying to remove his goods during the demolition exercise.

The Army Public Relations Officer, 34 Artillery Brigade, Haruna Tarwai, denied the allegation, claiming that his men neither killed nor manhandled anybody.

Dailypost reports that the Imo State Government has released a statement denying any killings in the Owerri Market claiming that hoodlums tried to loot the market but were confronted by some traders and it took the timely intervention of security personnel to restore order.
