The Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole has announced that a new strain of Cerebro Spinal meningitis (CSM) is in some parts of the country.
According to Prof. Adewole the new strain is not common in Nigeria but was imported from Niger Republic. He stated that the Federal Government has deployed a team of epidemiologists along with vaccines to arrest the outbreak.
Sokoto and Zamfara have been identified as the states currently affected by the outbreak although more northern states would be affected if not proper addressed.
The Minister said that the Federal Government wil work closely with the state ministries of health to contain the situation adding that whatever is needed in terms of materials and technical support will be made available by the Federal Government.
According to Adewole, CSM like many ailments like usually occur during the dry season and we expect many health challenges.
“Global warming had changed many things; as far as we are concern we would be ready for many things,’’ he said.
The outbreak of CSM has so far claimed five lives in Gada and Wauru towns of Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
