Following
the attempted jailbreak at the abakaliki prisons, the State Executive Council
in a meeting condemned the incident and that took place in Ebonyi state prison
last week.
The
members of The council further directed for the compilation of the details of
all the inmates awaiting
trials with a view to liaise with the Director of
Public Prosecution to determine their viability and to give deserving cases
speedy trial (currently, it seems that the prisons has more of awaiting trials
inmates).
The
State Government on the other hand pledged its commit to build new and adequate
structures to ease congestion and elevate sufferings of Ebonyi state prison
inmates especially the ones who were still awaiting trials. The
structures will be handed over to the Federal Government upon completion.
In another development, The State executive Council has directed all banks that are
partly or fully defaulting in the payment of revenues to the State Government
to pay up or face the sealing of their business premises.
From
all indications, the council has given a seven (7) day grace to all banks in
Ebonyi state to pay off their debts to the government or face the risk of its
corporate environment being sealed. The council further listed such debts some
of which includes COT deductions, excess charges, excess deductions,
withholding tax, excess interest charges and non-remittance of PAYE and all
such debts. The government further lamented that the total debts due to the
government totals to over N4 billion .
All banks operating within the state have been advised to look into their books and make appropriate remittances to the State’s Revenue service.
